Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt became the first woman to lead a nuclear aircraft Carrier in US Naval history. Bauernschmidt, who previously served as the Abraham Lincoln's executive officer from 2016 to 2019, took over command from Capt. Walt Slaughter during a ceremony last August.

What is Aircraft Carrier

An aircraft carrier is a warship equipped with an open long deck for take off and landing of aircraft. It also provides facilities for carrying, arming, deploying, and recovering aircraft. There are only handful of countries which either operates or manufacture an aircraft carrier. US does both and it currently has 11 aircraft carriers in the active service duty.

USS Abraham Lincoln is the fifth Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. The warship’s permanent home is at the Naval Air Station, North Island in the San Diego Bay area. Last January, it made its way to its new home in San Diego following a 10-month cruise around the world starting from its previous homeport in Norfolk in Virginia. First woman to Lead a Nuclear Aircraft Carrier in US Naval History

Since the time when Loretta Perfectus Walsh became the first woman to enlist in the United States Navy to now when Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt became the first woman to lead a nuclear aircraft carrier, US has come a long way in enlisting woman to top position in the Naval forces.

Past Experience

Capt. Amy Bauernschmidt previously served as the commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 70 and the amphibious transport dock San Diego. She has completed more than 3,000 flight hours during her career.

What It means to Other Woman Officers

This is certainly a huge moment which will encourage the entire next generation woman officers to achieve the commanding position in such a reputated World Class Naval force. This will break the stereotype and will motivate other young woman minds to join Navy as an attractive career option. This will also serve as an inspiration to all other countries who still prohibit woman for the top Naval posts. Some of them even does not allow woman officers in Country's Naval forces.
